Part 1
The Law of Balance
Universal laws or natural principles belong to our collective wisdom. These laws never change. They contain "recipes", or rules of how to lead our lives in order to live in health and well-being. One of these laws is “The Law of Balance”. I'm sure you are familiar with it, but do you live by its recommendations?
A plant needs to have its needs met to ensure its quality of life. If we don't water it, it dies, and if we water it too much, it also dies. Therefore, when we satisfy its needs, we try to avoid both too much and too little, because both extremes will harm its well-being and survival.
But satifying a plant´s needs in a balanced way is not possible unless we know what its needs are. We have to know in advance if it likes sun or shade, how often it needs water and so on.
WE HUMANS ARE ALSO ORGANISMS. JUST LIKE A PLANT, OUR WELL-BEING DEPENDS ON THE BALANCED SATISFACTION OF OUR NEEDS.
The Law of Balance helps us avoid the extremes. Questions like “am I exaggerating something?” or "am I neglecting some need?" can help us restore balance and improve our well-being and quality of life.
But it is not always easy to achieve this, because the knowledge we have about our own needs and how to detect an imbalance is usually very limited. The reason is that in this sense, we do not know ourselves very well.
Because of this ignorance, and because of the wrong messages or ¨truths¨ we receive at home and at school about what is important or not important in life, we end up not knowing how to obey the Law of Balance.
Instead, many seek their well-being guided by the paradigm: “What I know and what I have is more important than who I am. Knowing and having is more important than being. The more I have, the more I am.».
If what one seeks is well-being and happiness, this paradigm is a wrong guide, because it creates imbalance and suffering. A person who follows it lives in extremes, exaggerating his dedication to physical, material and intellectual needs, and neglecting his emotional and spiritual dimensions.
Other people choose the map: «The poorer I am, the closer to God I am». This belief of scarcity and sacrifice also leads us to disobey the Law of Balance, because it also creates a life of extremes. By dedicating ourselves almost exclusively to the spiritual dimension, we minimize the importance of material and physical needs (including sexual ones), renouncing and repressing earthly life.
OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES OF HOW THE LAW OF BALANCE HAS BEEN EXPRESSED FOR MILLENIUMS IN MANY CULTURES
Do you want to know how to create greater balance in your life? In the next post we will talk about that.
