A useful tool derived from the holistic model is The Wheel of Life. It helps to define in more detail which are the areas and activities in your life that need to be adjusted in terms of attention and time.

Creating a balanced lifestyle and healthy work habits is difficult because, as we said in the previous post, the traditional upbringing and education that most people receive do not provide the knowledge and tools necessary to know how to live according to The Law of Balance. This makes it impossible to develop comprehensive well-being.

They teach us how to produce, but not how to live. As a consequence, we easily become human "doings" with a life excessively focused on mental and work activities (the "knowing", the "doing" and the "having"), with little time for the emotional and spiritual needs of our BEING, who is left unattended.

Excessive dedication to knowing, doing and having causes negative stress that, together with our neglected heart and hungry soul, produces destructive behavior, conflicts and health problems.

Additionally, self-ignorance about our being and insecurities created in our childhood weaken us and make us vulnerable to manipulation by those who claim to have the power and the truth. Without realizing it, this creates an existential conflict: we end up living life according to other people´s beliefs, purposes and schemes.

Defining consciously our life´s purpose and living according to our own beliefs is a fundamental need of our spirit. The lack of this existential clarity becomes a source of depression, anguish and conflict that also make us sick.

I call these diseases spirit-somatic diseases, that is, diseases that have their origin in a spiritual/existential imbalance, but are expressed in the body. (As psycho-somatic illnesses are physical expressions of a mental/emotional imbalance)

To see if you need to initiate some changes in your lifestyle and work habits to have more balance in your life, especially a better work-life balance, you can start by asking yourself:

• What do I spend my free time doing?
• Do I rest on weekends?
• Do I take my vacations?
• Do I have enough time with my friends and loved ones?
• Do I have a hobby or other creative activity?
• Are my beliefs and life purpose defined by me?
• Do I have a daily activity that nourishes my spirit and gives me strength?

The most common imbalance in our society is the combination of an excess of work (too much knowing, doing and having) and a lack of emotional and spiritual satisfaction (too little being). If this is the case for you, if you work late almost every day, if you often bring work home and sacrifice your weekends and vacations for work, try the following:

1. Start by leaving work an hour earlier than usual once a week. Then you do it 2 or 3 days a week, and you will see that the work continues to flow and the company is still in business.

2. Very consciously define some activities especially directed towards the satisfaction of your being.

In some periods of your life you can dedicate more time to work and maybe neglect some other needs, you will tolerate that, but if it becomes your permanent lifestyle, sooner or later, it will create problems for you.

DON'T BECOME A WORKAHOLIC, IT'S NOT WORTH IT.

If you exaggerate your dedication to work all your life, it is very likely that when you retire you will experience very little joy. Reaching that age and not feeling satisfied, is sad. Feeling that one’s purpose in life has only partially been fulfilled, that something is missing. Feeling isolation and loneliness, and perhaps asking the question "why don't my children come to visit me?"

In the next post we shall talk about another important universal law: The Law of Rhythm.
